Upintheair Theatre  Presents a Reading of Zahida Rahemtulla's

The Wrong Bashir

The-Wrong-Bashir.jpg

Bashir Ladha, UBC philosophy major leaning towards Buddhism, is mixed up with Bashir Ladha, religious all-star with an outstanding track-record of good deeds in his community. The wrong Bashir has accidentally been selected to assume an important religious position, and his parents have dutifully accepted on his behalf.

Debut playwright Zahida Rahemtulla and Jessie and Fringe award-winning director/producer Rohit Chokhani join forces to bring you a brand-new comedy about a family and community grappling with the future of their identity in Canada. The play centres around a religious council’s mix-up between two second-generation millennials – both named Bashir Ladha – who they have selected to fill a prestigious religious role.  A family conflict ensues over the mistaken young man’s reaction to his appointment, taking the family on a comedic journey towards understanding their intergenerational migratory identity in Canada.

The Wrong Bashir is a work-in-progress currently in its very early stages. Special thanks to Playwrights Theatre Centre, Project SAT, and the Arts Club LEAP Playwriting Program for supporting its development.
