About

Our Mission: Upintheair Theatre is a populist theatre company that creates, produces and presents theatrical events exploring inspiration, collaboration and story. Narrative is very important to us.

Upintheair Theatre was formed by Daniel Martin and David Mott in 1999. After producing a series of sell-out Fringe hits, the company launched the Walking Fish Festival in 2003 as a way of developing links and relationships among emerging theatre artists in Vancouver. Over nine successful years, Walking Fish became a key event in the Vancouver calendar for emerging theatre artists, with over 450 emerging artists participated in the production of 88 original, Canadian works.

In 2010, Upintheair launched a larger two-week theatre festival with a national scope, Neanderthal Arts. Produced in partnership with Left Right Minds the festival incorporated the Walking Fish Festival and full length shows from local and national emerging professional companies and artists. In 2013, building on the strengths of Walking Fish and Neanderthal, Upintheair launched a new festival: rEvolver: the changing stage.

Upintheairs second major activity stream is the creation and production of new work. Since 2000, the company has created entertaining and original plays for a broad audience. Check out our past productions for more information on shows such as 120bpm, Wedgie, and Wagabondi Ho!
