120bpm

Upintheair Theatre presented the Canadian premiere of 120bpm (One-Twenty B-P-M), a comic tragedy about the ups, and downs, of Vancouver's late night after hour's party scene, April 3rd - 20th 2007.
True stories taken from Vancouverites who participated in the cities all-night dance parties, club, and rave scenes formed the core of this compelling magic-realist myth about the loss of innocence and the power of dreams.
What drives us to excess? And what drives us to stop? 120bpm explores the hilarious comedy, the uplifting joy, the mind-boggling boondoggle, and the heartbreaking consequences that come with partying all the time, within the imaginative visual framework of the blossoming 1990's rave scene.
Mott and Martin first began working together producing a legendary Vancouver underground after hours, The Space . For 120bpm they joined forces with Aidan Maxted, a graduate of SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts and ex-Vancouver Island Rave promoter. The values of that scene - love, compassion, generosity, have motivated and guided their artistic vision for Upintheair from its inception through to the present. In this sense, 120bpm is the show they have been working on since 1999. Don't miss it.
120bpm featured Sara Bynoe (Teen Angst, Sparkle Bunny), David Flemming (CBC's North South), Chris Frary (Skydive, Equus), Caitlin Fulton (Three Sisters: A Black Rock Opera), Miranda Huba (Tigermilk), Jamie James, Kyle Jesperson (Beggars Would Ride), Frano Marsic (Genuus Theatre), and Daniel Errey. Lighting Design by Darren Boquist (Titus, Carnage), Costumes by Sabrina Evertt (Werewolves), Live Sound by Luke Martin with DJ Flyte. Stage Management by Noa Anatot. The play was directed by Daniel Martin and Dave Mott.
120bpm is a site-installed performance with live DJ set. For more information on the play or the script, please contact the Artistic Directors.
